A case of atypical Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) on a farm in Essex today.

Unlike classical BSE, atypical BSE occurs spontaneously and is a non-contagious form of the disease.

蹤獲弝け President Dr Elizabeth Mullineaux said:

The Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) has confirmed a single case of atypical BSE in a cow on a farm in Essex. The animal showed some clinical signs and has been humanely culled. Defra and the Food Standards Agency have confirmed that this case poses no risk to food safety or human health.

The fast identification of the disease is testament to a robust veterinary surveillance system that is effective in detecting potential risk.

We would like to remind vets to refer to the Governments on the clinical signs and how to report any suspicious cases.
